Smart Mop Review

by Dale Harcourt on August 6, 2010

SmartMop is an infomercial cleaning product that claims to be super-absorbent, easy-to-use, easy-to-clean and lighter than your average janitor-issued mop that we know and love from childhood cafeterias.

The thing that separates this from a traditional mop that you’d pick up at Home Depot is the twisting design to wring out water, wavy mop end, unique fabric and lighter-weight plastic handle. As soon as you take it out of the box, you notice that this is different from most household products on the market, but does it really live up to the hype?

Who Is It For?

SmartMop is for parents. Plain and simple, this product has been designed almost specifically to attack spills, usually those of kids. Soda, pasta sauce, milk, wine (for those of us with really annoying kids), whatever might end up on your linoleum floor or hardwood surface, SmartMop is a product for parents.

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty mop for large jobs and frequent cleaning, it might not be as effective a product. For example, if you’re looking for the right mop to get your house-cleaning business off the ground or your custodial career finally in motion, you’ll probably want a giant mop that you can smell from the other side of Lowes.

What Do You Get For How Much

Smart-Mop.com currently has a two-for-one offer on their full SmartMop package. It seemed to be the best deal we could find online, although it comes with the caveat to pay shipping and handling on both SmartMops in the package. However, it also comes with a thirty-day money-back guarantee, so if it’s not for you, then you can return the SmartMop at no risk. The two-for-one order includes:

  • Two SmartMops
  • Six “shammies,” which are clothes that you can use for hand-cleaning
  • User guide
  • Warranty

The base price is $19.99, but when shipping for both mops came into play, the total was around $35 for two mops. Our advice? Split it with a friend. Then you’re getting a pretty-decent product for less than $20, plus you can return it if you’re not satisfied.

How Does It Hold Up?

We dumped some chunks of pasta sauce on our hardwood floor and put it to the test. Granted this experiment is without soap or a bucket, so it’s a little bit of a high school-production effort, but should get the point across:

The SmartMop did appear to do a good job at absorbing the tomato sauce and water and not spilling liquids across the floor or counter after we wrung up the mess. We didn’t pull off the infomercial trick of sopping up some soda then dumping the same amount in a nearby cup, but it did appear to mop up the tomato sauce better than an average mop, without spreading the mess everywhere.

Positives

SmartMop did a good job at absorbing the spill, more so than a regular mop. It didn’t spread the sauce out too much and it did seem to have some sticking power to the mop. SmartMop was easy to wring out with the simple twist handle and was ready to go for another swipe.

  • Lightweight
  • Easy and effective to wring out
  • Absorbed spill better than regular mop
  • Didn’t drip water or spread out mess as much as a regular mop
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Plastic handle was gentler than regular mop’s wooden handle

Negatives

We’ve been reviewing infomercial products long enough to know that they seem to have consistencies with their drawbacks. SmartMop falls into this category, that it seems to live up to the hype when it comes to specific problems, but the versatility comes up short.

  • Not ideal for cleaning large rooms or an entire house
  • Mop head would snag on one side, needed to use hand to spread it out.
  • Not as large of surface covered by a big mop.
  • Plastic handle didn’t provide as sturdy a grip.

Final Verdict

All-in-all, SmartMop is a reliable product to have around the house. It might not the be-all, end-all solution to all your cleaning needs, but for targeting specific messes, it is more effective than a large mop. If you have children or pets, this is definitely a good product to have around the house. You might want to keep a broom or industrial-strength nearby, but you’ll be impressed with the effectiveness and it cleans up spills very well.

How to Buy

SmartMop is available from Smart-Mop.com, where you can get two for the price of one, plus shipping on both mops. We recommend splitting with a friend or family member, or try it out and take advantage of the 30-day guarantee.
