Fix It is a car scratch repair kit that claims to cover paint scratches caused by keys or scuffs, which makes it the ideal product for people that annoy everyone in the bar or can’t park. We received the straightforward Simonez Fix It pen, which looks like a marker you run over scratches, although we did not test buying magic markers and running those over the scratch as well.
The “kit” basically entails a pen with a wooden tip that you have to depress to satiate in the Fix It solution and includes a second wooden tip. It also has very detailed instructions not mentioned in the infomercial and can make the difference between covering up scratches and leaving stains on your car. It is our recommendation that you follow these suggestions religiously as we tried different methods of using the pen and were met with a range of results.
What You Get
We picked up the Simoniz Fix It pen, which retails for about ten bucks and has been met with very mixed reviews on Amazon. It is also possible to buy the complete package, which includes the pen, the microfiber cloth, the home kit and a turbo vac, which allows you to spray the solution more liberally on different surfaces. This all comes out to $20 plus another $10 for shipping and handling, but if you’re just looking for the pen to fix car scratches, you’re best off getting the $10 basic kit and giving it a try on a small blemish.
Who It’s For
Aside from the aforementioned bar brawlers, tasteless joke tellers and guys that hit on girls when their boyfriends are nearby who garner a good car scratching, we found that the smaller the scratch, the better. Although the infomercial promotes Fix It’s ability to wipe away massive scratches, we found that super long scratches were problematic with Fix it.
Fix It is best on older cars with several small scratches due to scuffs, age and wear-and-tear. We would not recommend it as a solution for your brand new Porsche or for fixing extremely deep scratches or deep scuffs. Fix It is a handy and minimal solution for small scratches, in no way is it on par with the work of a professional body shop or new paint job. That said, while one of those will cost you hundreds of dollars, Fix It runs from between ten and thirty bucks.
Product Review
Check out our video of Dan giving the Fix It a try on several scratches along his car. We did it along some long ones on the side, a couple of short scuffs and major scraping along the front.
How It Held Up
Akin to a lot of the reviews you’ll find online, especially on Amazon, where some people railed against it like it was their job, we had very mixed feelings about Fix It. This is probably due to following the extremely specific instructions written on the pen which can hold severe consequences if you mess it up. These include:
- Applying to a part of your car that is in the shade, but warmer than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Wiping excess Fix It away immediately.
- Turing to your car around to dry in the sun.
- Allowing to dry for anywhere between one and forty-eight hours.
The small scratch were we applied a minimal amount of Fix It worked fine. It was covered up and you couldn’t see anything and has gotten better over time. The long scratch was where we ran into difficulty. Since this covered a major span of the driver door, we had difficulty wiping the excess solution away while leaving it on the mark and wound up with lines in some places and visibility of the scratch in others. Along the huge scuff mark, we found mixed results with some parts covered up fine and others being too deep for Fix It to be effective.
Final Verdict
While Fix It is by no means on par with an expert paint job or trip to the body shop, it will cover up minor scratches and improve the sheen of your car. All in all, the less you use it, the better. We recommend using the thin side of the wooden tip along minor scratches and testing a small amount at a time. Don’t go overboard the first time you try it and attempt to fill in every scratch for your big date that night.
Adhere to the directions religiously and test it in minor areas to make sure you are satisfied with the results. Once you apply it to a large swath, you can’t change things, so little parts at a time will get the look that you’re hoping for with the Fix It pen.
